Now let’s take a trip to the beautiful continent of Africa! 🌍

African Roots

African roots are prominent in Caribbean history due to the slave trade. Many Caribbean’s as of today are direct descendants from Africa. Many islanders call themselves children of Africa. The slave trade has created a blending of many cultures from the respected African nations and spread throughout the Caribbean islands. Although we view slavery as immoral, what came over besides forced labor was the benefits the Caribbean’s received with the creativity of Food and music. We are proud of our history and make it a point to promote through cooking. 🍳 This fusion with Africa has created a strong cultural connection.

Africa’s influence is definitely a foundation to Caribbean culture!

Africa’s Influence

African culture and roots have a heavy influence on Caribbean cooking. If you want to get a taste for yourself, then you have to try our jerk chicken and brown stew chicken. Popular foods from Africa are embedded in many Caribbean’s diets, such as plantains and okra to name a few. The cultural exchange that is shared between the islands and the continent is amazing. This fusion with Africa is what makes the Caribbean unique. At this point you would agree that predominately the population in the Caribbean Islands are Africans. Here at Karibe, we recognize that African history also takes place in the Caribbean as well.

Caribbean Food Better Than African Food

I hope you enjoyed our brief history lesson. 😊 Now let’s dive into weather Caribbean’s can cook better than Africans.

The argument between whose food is better is nonsense. Neither Africans nor Caribbean’s are better than each other. As you’ve previously read, many Caribbean dishes come from or are a mix from Africa. The very Africans that were brought to the islands due slavery are the foodies that create the special dishes we eat today. Here at Karibe, we believe in unity and identify as one within the African diaspora. ✊🏿 Honestly, whenever we hear this debate, it gives us a nice chuckle. Cleary those debating is not aware of Caribbean’s fusion with Africa.
