The relationship between food and culture can be a meaning of an individual and can represent the growth of one’s identity.
This may be obvious but your diet and what you lean towards eating daily is a part of you from birth. You may consider yourself a foodie and eat a variety of different types of food but if you sat back and thought about it, your culture may play a role in what you consider your favorites.
The significance of what you eat is an expression of you. More like a description of one’s culture. Does your food have many seasonings like Jamaicans or do you have strong pescatarian diet like the Japanese? There isn’t one culture that stands above others, but this post enlightens you on the relationship between food and culture.
Representation of culture is important here at Karibe, and we are curious by how our own individual history has a role in our diets today.
Representation of Culture
Your representation of culture can also be interpreted as a language to describe an individual. At times communication may be nonverbal, so simply by observing an individual you can learn a lot. By no means is it my goal to turn this post into a psychology study but hang in there with me as I explain. From how your food is prepared to what you commonly eat stems from your location, influence, and sometimes your beliefs. Take the opportunity to observe or if you are bold enough, speak with your peers to review their diet. Ask yourself why certain cultures eat certain foods? Is there any significant meaning? What is the historical context of why eat certain foods? Please share your results in the comments. I am curious to read your thoughts.
As a result, you as an individual have the diet and preference of food because it has been embedded in you since you were young. I do not believe anything is wrong with this as you are a representation of your culture.
The Meaning of The Individual
As you reflect, you may have confirmed that your favorite foods are tied to you from birth. As you get older, I encourage you to expand your horizons and try other types of dishes. This will definitely increase your foodie level and will also show growth of one’s identity. Look at this as an opportunity to create a description of one’s culture. You as an individual is special to us and what motivate us to be the best cookware brand as well as being a resource for African and Caribbean culture.
Food and culture play a role in our history and identifying the roots of who we are can take us to greater heights.
Food and Culture
I ask that you use this post as motivation to enhance food and culture within yourself. Make an honest effort to try other cultures’ food. Don’t just eat but also make it a point to prepare the meals yourself. If you need some inspiration, check out The Kulture and I am certain you will find something you will enjoy. Show your creativity, fuse different cultures for that special dish. For example, our Jerk Chicken Quesadillas blend the Caribbean and Mexican cuisine in one dish.
You have the ability to enhance your culture. Embrace it!
Wrap It Up…
The relationship between food and culture is not complex as it is the meaning of an individual and represents the growth of one’s identity.
Your upbringing is the foundation of who you are due to geographic location, influences around you and family beliefs, but you have the ability to expand by exploring other parts of the world and changing your environment. Express your world through food. Whether it is cooking or trying new restaurants, take the next step in adding to your culture.
