Nigerian meat pie is a great treat while you wait for your main course, and you should definitely give it a try! Easy to prepare and we have provided a video that you can view below if you want to jump right into it. ๐Ÿ˜Š Now before your jump to the recipe, please do not confuse African meat pies with a Jamaican patty. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ฒ Although they are similar in appearance, I would argue that the Nigerian meat pie would be a healthier option as it has more of a combination with vegetables. Our African meat pie recipe is what I would call a west African specialty. Rich seasonings, rich ingredients, rich Kulture results in a rich meat pie!

History of African Meat Pie 

African meat pies were established in Nigeria during British colonization. These pastries were introduced in England by the Greeks and Romans. Through the years and the creativity of Nigerian cooking developed these rich meat pies that we enjoy today. 

Meat Pie Ingredients 

When you think of pie, the first thought that may come to your mind is dessert. I donโ€™t blame you, but thanks to creative foodies like yourself, pie has so many variations. The question that I asked myself prior to having any insight was, what is meat pie? After some research it is quite simple. Meat pie is filling with meat and other rich ingredients. The key word is ingredients! In my opinion Nigerian meat pie ingredients is what separate itself amongst other pies.ย 

Onions, bell peppers, beef all baked with flour and potatoes is simply amazing.  After a quick bake, these pastries are flaky with a punch in the stomach of delicious flavor. ๐Ÿฅฐ Now I may be biased, but our meat pie ingredients do wonders for my taste buds. Equipment

Ingredients
  

Crust/Base

  • 250 grams Canned minced Beef
  • 240 grams Plain flour extra for dusting and thickening
  • 150 grams Unsalted butter
  • 1/4 tsp Salt
  • 4 tblsp Water

Filling

  • 2 tblsp Vegetable oil
  • 1 large Chopped onion
  • 1 cup Mixed bell peppers
  • 3 medium Potatoes peel and cubes

Seasoning

  • Knorr
  • Powdered Pepper
  • Cumin
  • Flour

Instructions
 

Make The Filling

  • Place a pan of oil on medium heat for about 2 minutes.
  • Add chopped onions and fry till onion is translucent.
  • Add in bell peppers and potatoes and fry for about 7 minutes.
  • Stir in seasoning and mix till all combines.
  • Reduce the heat, if need be, to avoid burning.
  • Pour in 200ml of water and allow to cook on low heat for about10 minutes stirring occasionally.
  • Add in canned beef and stir to combine.
  • Allow it to cook for additional 5 minutes.
  • Take it off the heat and allow to cool.

Make The Dough

  • In a shallow mixing bowl, add flour and salt and mix together.
  • Add in butter and rub together till all turn to crumbs.
  • Add 4 tablespoons of water and mix till all is combined. If the dough still needs water add a tablespoon of water at a time till you get well combined dough hat is able to fall apart easily.
  • Set dough aside in a cool place or a fridge for 30 minutes then you move on to preparing the meat filling.

Rolling and Making the Pie

  • Preheat oven at 180C/350F.
  • Sprinkle a bit of flour on your rolling surface.
  • Place some dough on and roll out flat using a rolling pin.
  • Cut out into desirable shapes. Repeat this process with the rest of the dough.
  • Brush one half of the dough with some flour & water mixture (to help with the seal) and add the meat filling to the center of the dough.
  • Carefully fold over the meat filling by making sure the 2 edges touch one another.
  • Repeat this process for the remaining dough and filling.
  • Place in the oven and bake for 25minutes at 180Cโฐ.

Notes

Tips
  • You can use ground or minced beef in place of canned beef if desirable.
  • Allow the filling to cool down completely before adding to pie dough.
  • If using salted butter for this recipe, please omit salt from making the dough.
  • Alternatively, make the short crust pastry in a food processor. It would only take you about 5 minutes top.
