Shang recently moved to Atlanta, GA and wanted to introduce a Chinese BBQ restaurant. Her fellow foodies of the empire state of the south will appreciate her creativity. She recently tried this venture up north but considered it will be more of a success down south. Shang was a little nervous because she considered her recipes to be plain. Destined for success she knew she had to spice things up to compete with all the great restaurants in Atlanta. Shang searched for βChinese BBQβ and found Caribbean style char siu on KaribeTV.
π€¨ Skeptical of the recipe, she decided to do more research on Karibe. It appears that Karibe focuses on blending African and Caribbean recipes with other cultures. π With immense delight Shang was eager to recreate this Chinese pork recipe and add it to the menu of her new restaurant.
Chinese BBQ
After a thorough review of BBQ tips, she was certain to be a success and became more confident. As Chinese BBQ to be her forte to attract customers, it would be perfect to consider Karibeβs char siu as her signature plate π½οΈ. After getting fully settled in Georgia, Shang eagerly dove into the recipe to learn how to make Char Siu.
How To Make Char Siu?
To give her new patrons the true satisfaction of this Chinese pork recipe, she realized that she had to perfect the marinade. The basting process was vital as well as the ingredients used. This would potentially allow her to have the best BBQ restaurant in Georgia. When recreating her marinade, Shang printed out the recipe card and had KaribeTV on repeat. Bound certain for success she was attentive to each key ingredient.
Char Siu Sauce
The combination of Chinese and Caribbean spices and sauce made this recipe to die for. π Hoisin sauce, Chinese five spice, and jerk paste was obviously a creation of a foodie scientist. With a few iterations and having local friends try her plate she was confident and ready to launch her new restaurant.
Caribbean Style Char Siu
On opening day, Shangβs No.1 China BBQ was a success with the feature recipe being char siu. πExcited by her new level of success with a spontaneous move to Atlanta, it turned to be a great decision. With a little research and help from Karibe, she is motivated to recreate more Chinese recipes with a mix of karibbean flavor.

Caribbean Style Char Siu π¨π³
Equipment
- Karibe Utensil Set

Ingredients
Marinade
- 1 tbsp Hoisin Sauce
- Β½ tbsp Chinese Five Spice
- 1 tbsp Brown Sugar
- 1 tbsp Preferred Homemade Mixed Spice
- 1 tbsp Jerk Paste
- 1Β½ tbsp Dark Soy Sauce
- 1 tbsp Vegetable Oil
- 1 tsp Red Food Coloring
Basting Marinade
- Leftover Marinade
- 1 tbsp Honey
- 1 tbsp Oil
- Β½ tbsp Jerk Seasoning
Instructions
Preparation
- Mix all the ingredients for the marinade in a bowl and save β for use later.
- Place the pork in Ziplock bag and pour the marinade on it. Make sure to mix it well in the bag and allow it to marinate for at least 24hrs in the fridge.
- When youβre done marinating, preheat oven to 180C.
- Line a tray with foil and place a rack on top. Remove pork and place them gently on the rack.
- Add a bit of water to the tray to avoid burning and roast for 25 minutes.
- Remember the β marinade saved earlier, add 1tbsp jerk spice, 1 tbsp honey & 1 tbsp oil, mix and set aside.
- Check pork after 25 mins, remove and baste with the new marinade on both sides.
- Place it back in the oven and roast for additional 15 minutes until sticky to touch.
- Remove from the oven and allow it to rest for about 5-10 minutes before slicing
- Serve as desired and enjoy.

- You can use whole pork shoulders and slice to your preferred thickness.
- Feel free to throw in other spices you enjoy
